A slide show of beautiful specimens and a real pain in the ass!

  • Slide one: The American Catfish, just as the fresh water crayfish, a real problem for the long distant carpfishery. Even boilies as hard as stone first becomes a cube and than disappears within 2 hours. When "lucky" you will be signed by your optonic alarm that such a little bludger is hooked otherwise your are fishing your costly hours for nothing!!!
  • Slide two: Double Fun! Me and my friend Paul both with a beautiful carp at the second day of our first session on Lac du Der back in 1994 (You won't believe me but I forgot the weights!)
  • Slide 3: Yeah!!! My personal record (unfortunate still is) a 36.4 real pound mirror from du Der.
  • Not a bad start our first session on Cassien. My friend Paul landed his first Cassien 30++ after a boat tour along the Lake itself.

Lakes
  • "Nijkerker Nauw" Nijkerk A beautiful shallow water to practice long distance fishing. The average water depth is about 1 meter. You need a boat or the self-confidence that you are able to cast at least 150 meters to reach the channel of the lake. The chances to catch carp on your first session is very high. Although specimens are rare, I think (I' am not sure) 30++ must be there.
  • "Grindgaten" near Wessum aan de Maas. A beautiful water to play with your fish finder. The water is very deep (places up to 50 meters are possible), so the goal is to find a plateau or you must fish near the shore. It is a water to check your tactics for the french barrages. The chances to catch carp are low, but if you get one the can be huge! If I am right the record on the nearby river Maas (which is connected to the lake) is 49 real pounds. Good Luck! back
Channels
  • "Zuid Willemsvaart" at all places A top channel to catch all the carp you want. This channel hides a lot of small common, mirror and line carp but also a respectable amount of 30++ specimens. Due to high angling pressure the chances to catch a 20+ carp on your first session are decreasing rapidly. One of the best spots at the moment is the new detour of the channel around the City Helmond. A more difficult spot (with a relative higher amount of big fish) is the one nearby the animal feed corporation CeHaVe Vegel. Warning watch out for aggressive "colleagues" with taptoe pictures on their arms who claim that you are sitting on "their" spot!
  • "Whilhelmina" Channel at "Beton Son" or "Stad van Gerwen" A quiet place to fish on medium sized carp. If you are lucky you will catch a nice30+ but this is more an exception than a common experience. There were rumours that local people did expand the carp population with a lot of small ones back.
Rivers
  • River Rhine A spectacular river with a lot of potential. The carp are difficult to find but if you catch one it is probably big!!! The biggest catch I know is done nearby Rhenen is a 42 pound grass carp. Not a Cyprinus Carpio but still interesting.
  • River IJssel Well known for its spectacular spots at the inlet of Lake IJssel near the City Kampen. back
Amazing pounds
  • De "Gemeentevijver" at Nuenen. This small pound of roughly 1/4 acre contains a few unexpected big carps. The biggest fish I caught of 23 pound is not as spectacular as if the average weight and length of the fish I did catch in this mistery pound: Average Length/Weight 78.4 cm/15.2 pounds with Number of fish=60.
  • Vijver het "Love"at Someren. This pound does contain a mistery fish called "Moby Dick" Nobody did ever catch the fish but everybody claims that he was over 105cm!!! I believe I saw him just one time. He was laying along the shore and I was counting the poles of the shore structure. 16 poles of around 7.5 cm in diameter (makes 120 cm) which means Moby Dick is still getting larger. Do you believe me! Of course not, but One thing you know for sure, is that you never know!!! back or Index

My Personal Experiences on some French Lakes

Lac du St croix
Lac du Der
Lac de Liez
Lac St Cassien

Lac de St croix This beautiful Lake in the Provence (south) is one of the largest berrages in France. I thought the total surface of the lake was 2200 ha and the depth varieties from 1 m to almost 80 m close to the dam. The Lake contains an Island and around the Island you can find the best spots to fish. This lake has one disadvantage: Night fishing or even walking near the lake at night is prohibited. Another problem is that no fire is aloud. To bad because it is a superb water. The biggest fish on record is 50++ real pounds.
back
Lac du Der Chanteqoc A spectacular lake of 4800 ha, with a mean depth of only several meters. The Lake is extremely rich in food. You can compare this lake with a commercial fish pound because the lake is: shallow so the water temperature will rise quickly in spring; fed by a small river, which brings in a lot of nutrients; the lakes water level is lowered in winter so the organic materials on the bottom of the shores can oxidize to new nutrients; and the enormous amount of fishermen who actually cause a feed load which can reach more than 40% of daily dietary level for carps. Although catches are low nowadays (due to high angling pressure), the lake does still contain a lot of 20++, 30++ and a rare 60+ pound specimens. back
Lac Liez back
Lac de Cassien This is (or used to be) the Carp Mekka of France. Unfortunately the lake is not the same as a few years ago. The carp (big ones) are hard to catch due to a continuously high angling pressure. Another disadvantage is the introduction of a lot of small carps reaching an average weight of just 6 pounds. Looking back at the carp caught the last few years and all the specimens found dead, they estimate that there are still around 40 fish above 40++ living in the lake. With a size of 840 ha, this equals with 1 one 20 ha, not spectacular. On the other hand it is still a mistery lake and fishing at St Cassien still causes a rise in hart beats of many fisherman. A last important note about Cassien. Severe control on mostly useless rules due to the Gard de peche with terrible fines does make the lake very impopular nowadays. back Index
